ICT and Innovation

Given that the proportion of Knowledge Based businesses across the sub region is below the national average, the existence within the area of two internationally significant knowledge based economic assets is of great significance. These of course are BT's international Research and Development base at Adastral Park at Martlesham and the University of Essex in Colchester.

Both have the potential to deliver economic growth measured in thousands of new jobs both on site and within supply chains and clusters in the locality.

The Partnership has therefore been actively involved in seeking to support their major economic development projects - Innovation Martlesham and the Knowledge Gateway research park respectively.

BT employs over 3,000 people on its Adastral Park site and Innovation Martlesham has already attracted over 40 external businesses to locate on the site in recent times. In terms of the University of Essex, it was ranked in the top 10 in the UK for the quality of its research and has over 10,000 students drawn from over 130 countries. Its 42 acre Knowledge Gateway research park has the potential to attract innovative knowledge based businesses seeking to exploit opportunities to commercialise University know how. This could create up to 2,000 new jobs in Colchester.
